future

"One word I would banish from the dictionary is 'escape.' Just banish that and you'll be fine. Because that word has been misused regarding anybody who wanted to move away from a certain spot and wanted to grow. He was an escapist. You know if you forget that word you will have a much easier time. Also you're in the prime, the beginning of your life; you should experiment with everything, try everything.... We are taught all these dichotomies, and I only learned later that they could work in harmony. We have created false dichotomies; we create false ambivalences, and very painful one's sometimes -the feeling that we have to choose. But I think at one point we finally realize, sometimes subconsciously, whether or not we are really fitted for what we try and if it's what we want to do.

You have a right to experiment with your life. You will make mistakes. And they are right too. No, I think there was too rigid a pattern. You came out of an education and are supposed to know your vocation. Your vocation is fixed, and maybe ten years later you find you are not a teacher anymore or you're not a painter anymore. It may happen. It has happened. I mean Gauguin decided at a certain point he wasn't a banker anymore; he was a painter. And so he walked away from banking. I think we have a right to change course. But society is the one that keeps demanding that we fit in and not disturb things. They would like you to fit in right away so that things work now."

Spring (squeal!)

I have done an insane amount of purchasing this week, probably influenced by the magnificent weather we've been having. The truth is there are some projects I've been meaning to complete for, oh, about six months now. I can't wait for everything to arrive.

I'd really love to tell you about what I've been up to but the SUN IS SAYING HI and it'd be rude not to wave back. To the porch I go.

I have thirty minutes left on this hectic, grand Valentines Day to present you with the one I love.

rice krispies: the things you do for love

Jethro and I are celebrating Valentine's today because I have to work Monday. (What do you know, people actually want to go out to dinner to celebrate their love for each other. RUDE.) Kidding.

Anyway, I woke up early so I had time to get some things done before Jethro got home from school. Mainly, I wanted to make him rice krispie treats because they are his fave.

Everything was going good. I was simultaneously ignoring how obnoxiously odd it was to stir marshmallows around in melted butter AND how sticky my hands were.

About this time I am reading the box and being deceived into believing that these treats are so easy that I'll have to make them more often! Lies. The recipe includes only four steps none of which mention to "MAKE SURE YOU COMBINE THE KRISPIES AND MARSHMALLOWS FASTER THAN LIGHT OR YOU ARE SCREWED."

I remained calm and started shoveling the goo into the pan. Except, the goo would not budge. So I dug my hands in, except, that was the worst idea EVER. Sticky hands, magoo.

END PRODUCT: A PILE

It all tastes the same, right?

bedroom inspiration

From the day we moved in I've been wanting to find a lighting solution for our loft. I finally found the answer.

Next obstacle: replicate this for less than $70. The search begins.

wishful thinking

It's that time of the year where I am desperately yearning for a sun tan. My skins all messed up, I feel totally washed out, and I just need some vitamin D.

Yeah? Yeah.

two things

Saturday and Sunday it was over 60 degrees. AND sunny.

For 3.4 seconds I considered getting fired for this haircut. I NEED TO SHAVE MY HEAD. And get some red lipstick.

two thousand eleven

The last two years I've had the same resolution:

I'll do whatever it is that I want to do.

This is one of those sentences I repeat to myself all year long.

2011, I have no idea what you are going to bring, but I ask for balance, health, energy, love and plane tickets.

confession

The truth is,
When I'm at the gym I repeat "let's go, baby. just keep swimming. let's go. let's go. yeah. you got it." in my head the entire time I'm working out and it actually works. Maybe there is something to the "get pumped" mentality.

I wonder what everyone else thinks about while they're sweating.

bestest, yummiest, easiest granola ever

I've made granola three times over the past week and a half and I'm finally happy with my recipe.

4 cups rolled oats
 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup honey (or agave nectar, or maple syrup)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
6 T + 2tsp vegetable oil
pecans
walnuts
almonds
sesame seeds
dried cranberries
flaxseed

1. Mix the oats with the salt and cinnamon in a large bowl.

2. In a seperate small bowl, mix the oil, brown sugar, vanilla and honey.

3. Dump mixture number 2 over mixture number one. Stir until all the oats are covered. This might require using your hands.

4. Place granola onto a non-stick pan at 325 degrees for 10 minutes.

5. Flip granola over.

6. Add sesame seeds, almonds, walnuts and pecans and bake for another 10 minutes.

7. After you pull the granola out, add the flaxseeds and cranberries.

12.16

It's the busiest time of the year and I've been working non-stop. Due to the weather I was offered a room at the Inn Sunday night. Not a bad deal: $500 room, king size bed for one.

It officially feels like the Christmas season. The snow has put magic in the air and I feel warm and happy. I attended a wacky Christmas party on Saturday in a skin tight 90's cherry red dress complimented by a pine-tree green jacket with shoulder pads and drank hot apple cider mixed with red wine.

crappy quality, funny photo

My latest inspiration is pinterest which allows you to catalog things you like online by topic. I already do this on my desktop and I can't wait to start using it!

laughing.

When I was 13 my parents bought me a wonderful Columbia coat for skiing. I tried it on last year, as did Jethro and it safely fits both of us at the same time. Jethro did some reflecting on what kind of small talk might have been happening between my mom and dad at the time of purchase:

“Your parents were like, if she keeps growing for the next 15 years and gets pregnant with triplets, she might need this in her 3rd trimester.”

Tday eve

I have five hundred things to accomplish before the weekend and I all I can think is, how the hell do all of you working adults with children get food on the table and keep a house clean?

I keep falling over. Before the waterfall incident I fell while hiking with Jethro's friends. When our friends from Indy were here, I fell hiking AGAIN. And today at work I slipped and did the splits down the stair with a mop in my hand.  FUNNY SIGHT = SIX FOOT PERSON + MOP + FALLING.

All I need is some When Harry Met Sally and a glass of wine. Netflix needs a partner company: Boozefix.
